Noravank Monastery: Architecture Among the Red Cliffs

Noravank Monastery, situated in the Amaghu Valley of Vayots Dzor, developed into an important religious and artistic center.

The monastery is particularly associated with the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.

Its monuments include the Church of Saint Karapet and the two-story Church of Surb Astvatsatsin, completed in 1339.

The architect and sculptor Momik is closely associated with Noravank's artistic achievements.

The monastery's sculptural decoration demonstrates the exceptional refinement of late medieval Armenian stone carving.

Its location among steep reddish cliffs creates one of the most distinctive sacred landscapes in Armenia.

Noravank also served as a burial place for members of the Orbelian princely family, important patrons of religious and cultural institutions.
