Early Armenian Church Architecture
Christianity and Sacred Building
The adoption of Christianity as a state religion, traditionally dated to 301 CE, transformed Armenian religious life. Churches and monasteries gradually became centers of worship, learning, manuscript production, and community memory.
Etchmiadzin
The Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin is the spiritual center of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The cathedral’s early history is associated with Gregory the Illuminator, although the building has undergone substantial changes over the centuries.
Distinctive Architectural Forms
Armenian builders developed varied plans featuring domes, stone masonry, and carefully proportioned interior spaces. Cross-in-square and centrally planned churches became important expressions of the architectural tradition.
Preservation and Scholarship
Church buildings, inscriptions, and manuscripts are crucial evidence for Armenian medieval history. Their conservation requires attention to structural stability, historical materials, and the communities connected to them.
