How Many Armenians Were Killed?

Establishing an exact death toll is difficult because of conflicting prewar population statistics, incomplete wartime records, destroyed communities, forced conversions, migration, and the distinction between immediate deaths and later deaths associated with displacement.

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum estimates that at least 664,000 and possibly as many as 1.2 million Armenians died during the principal genocidal period of 1915–1916.

Other historical estimates, particularly those encompassing a wider period of persecution and its aftermath, frequently place Armenian losses at approximately 1 million to 1.5 million.

Yale University's Genocide Studies Program notes the uncertainty surrounding exact figures and discusses estimates of approximately 800,000 to 1 million deaths.

These estimates differ partly because historians use different population baselines, geographic boundaries, and time periods.

It is important not to confuse the number of people killed with the broader number of Armenians displaced, forcibly assimilated, impoverished, or otherwise affected.

The genocide destroyed the foundations of Armenian communal life across much of the Ottoman Empire, even where some individuals survived.

The absence of a universally agreed exact death toll does not undermine the historical conclusion that genocide occurred.
