The Armenian National Flag, Coat of Arms, and Anthem

Part 30 of 35 · Armenian Independence

Part XXIX — The Armenian National Flag, Coat of Arms, and Anthem

120. The Armenian Tricolor

The Armenian national flag consists of three equal horizontal stripes: red, blue, and orange.

The tricolor was associated with the First Republic of Armenia and was restored in 1990.

Official interpretations connect the colors with the Armenian people's historical struggles, aspirations for peace, and creative labor.

The flag symbolizes the continuity of Armenian national identity across the interruption of independence during Soviet rule.

121. The National Coat of Arms

The Armenian coat of arms incorporates symbols associated with four historical Armenian royal dynasties.

These include the Artaxiad, Arsacid, Bagratid, and Rubenid dynasties.

Mount Ararat appears at the center, with Noah's Ark represented above it.

An eagle and lion support the shield.

The coat of arms expresses the relationship between ancient Armenian monarchy, medieval statehood, Christian tradition, and the modern republic.

Its design emphasizes the historical continuity of Armenian political identity.

122. The National Anthem

Armenia's national anthem is Mer Hayrenik, meaning Our Fatherland.

The anthem draws upon the national anthem of the First Republic.

Its words are based on a poem by Mikael Nalbandian, with music associated with Barsegh Kanachyan.

The anthem was adopted for the modern republic in 1991.

Together, the flag, coat of arms, and anthem provide a symbolic connection between Armenia's historical past and its contemporary sovereignty.
