Part XXVII — The Armenian Diaspora and the Preservation of Independence
112. The Formation of the Modern Armenian Diaspora
Armenian communities existed outside the Armenian Highlands long before the twentieth century.
However, the Armenian Genocide produced a major transformation in the size and geographical distribution of the diaspora.
Survivors established or expanded communities in Syria, Lebanon, France, the United States, Argentina, and elsewhere.
These communities developed churches, schools, newspapers, charitable organizations, political associations, and cultural institutions.
The diaspora preserved Armenian identity during decades when Armenia was governed by the Soviet Union.
113. Diaspora Support for the First Republic
During the First Republic, Armenian communities abroad organized humanitarian relief, political advocacy, and fundraising.
Diaspora leaders participated in diplomatic efforts seeking recognition of Armenian statehood.
International relief organizations assisted refugees and genocide survivors.
The relationship between the First Republic and Armenian communities abroad helped establish a model of transnational support that continued into the modern era.
114. Diaspora Contributions After 1991
Following the restoration of independence, diaspora communities became important partners in Armenia's development.
Organizations and individuals contributed to humanitarian relief, educational programs, medical facilities, infrastructure, cultural preservation, and economic investment.
The Hayastan All-Armenian Fund, established in 1992, became one of the prominent institutions organizing diaspora-supported development projects.
Diaspora professionals also contributed expertise in business, science, medicine, law, technology, and public administration.
The diaspora's influence has not always been politically uniform.
Armenian communities abroad hold differing views on foreign policy, national identity, economic priorities, and relations with neighboring states.
Nevertheless, the diaspora remains an important element of Armenia's global connections.
