The End of the War and the Return Home
After Germany's defeat, the Soviet Union continued fighting Japan in August 1945.
World War II formally ended with Japan's surrender in September.
Armenian soldiers gradually returned from military service.
Many came home with physical injuries, psychological trauma, or illnesses acquired during wartime.
Others remained in the armed forces.
Reintegration into civilian life was difficult.
Housing shortages, economic hardship, missing relatives, and the demands of reconstruction shaped the postwar period.
Soviet Armenia nevertheless experienced continued industrial and urban development during subsequent decades.
The memory of wartime sacrifice became an important element of Armenian public identity.
