The Death of Monte Melkonian, June 12, 1993

Monte Melkonian
Monte Melkonian, known by the nom de guerre Avo, became one of the best-known Armenian commanders of the war.
Born in California in 1957, he had previously been involved in Armenian militant and political activities abroad before arriving in the region. During the war, he commanded Armenian forces in the Martuni sector.
Melkonian emphasized military discipline, coordination, and the defense of strategically important positions.
On June 12, 1993, he was killed near the village of Merzili, in the Aghdam area, during fighting with Azerbaijani forces.
His death was a major loss for Armenian forces.
He was subsequently awarded the title of National Hero of Armenia and became a prominent figure in Armenian public remembrance.
His legacy, like those of other wartime commanders, must be examined in the context of both his military role and the wider history of armed conflict in the region.
