Gandzasar Monastery and the Religious Heritage of Artsakh
Gandzasar Monastery, located in the historical region of Artsakh, is one of the most important monuments of medieval Armenian ecclesiastical architecture.
Its principal Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist was constructed during the thirteenth century under the patronage of Hasan-Jalal Dawla, an Armenian prince of Khachen.
Construction is generally dated to 1216–1238.
The cathedral is distinguished by elaborate exterior carvings, a richly decorated drum, and refined architectural proportions.
Gandzasar became a major religious center and later served as the seat of the Catholicosate of Aghvank, an ecclesiastical institution with a complex historical development and longstanding Armenian leadership.
The monastery's history is closely connected to the Armenian princely houses of Khachen and the religious traditions of the eastern Armenian Highlands.
Following Azerbaijan's establishment of control over Nagorno-Karabakh in September 2023 and the departure of nearly its entire ethnic Armenian population, the preservation, documentation, and accessibility of Armenian religious monuments in the region became especially urgent issues.
The history and current condition of individual monuments must be distinguished from competing modern territorial claims.
