Armenians in the Battle of Berlin

The Battle of Berlin, fought in April and May 1945, marked the final major Soviet offensive against Nazi Germany's capital.

Soviet armies encircled Berlin and fought through heavily defended districts.

The battle caused enormous military and civilian casualties and widespread destruction.

The 89th Tamanyan Rifle Division participated in the Berlin operation.

Its soldiers fought as part of the Soviet forces advancing into the city.

Armenian commemorative accounts prominently associate the division with the final victory and describe Armenian soldiers celebrating near the Reichstag.

The Reichstag itself became one of the most famous symbols of Germany's defeat.

The war in Europe ended after Germany's unconditional surrender, signed on May 7 and again in Berlin on May 8, 1945, taking effect late on May 8 Central European Time.

Because of the time difference, the Soviet Union commemorated Victory Day on May 9.

For Armenian veterans, the victory represented the end of years of extraordinary sacrifice.

Many, however, never returned home.
