Armenian Soldiers in the Liberation of Eastern Europe

By 1944, the Soviet Union had regained the strategic initiative on the Eastern Front.

Soviet forces launched major offensives into territories occupied by Germany.

Armenian soldiers participated in campaigns in Ukraine, Belarus, the Baltic region, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Germany.

The experience of these campaigns varied.

Some operations involved rapid advances after German defensive positions collapsed.

Others required costly battles against fortified cities, river crossings, and prepared defensive lines.

The Soviet advance brought liberation from Nazi occupation for many populations, but it also established or strengthened Soviet political control over much of Eastern Europe.

Both consequences form part of the historical record.

Armenian soldiers participated in these campaigns as members of the Soviet armed forces, not as representatives of an independent Armenian government.
