Armenian Airmen and Aviation

Armenian pilots and aviation personnel served in Soviet fighter, bomber, reconnaissance, and support aviation.

Their responsibilities included intercepting enemy aircraft, attacking military targets, protecting ground formations, and supporting Soviet offensives.

One prominent Armenian aviator was Nelson Stepanyan.

Nelson Stepanyan (1913–1944) became known for his service as a Soviet naval attack pilot.

He flew combat missions against German forces and shipping and received the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

Stepanyan was killed in action in December 1944 and was awarded a second Hero of the Soviet Union title posthumously.

Soviet wartime accounts credited Stepanyan with substantial combat achievements, although specific aircraft and shipping destruction totals should be treated as wartime claims rather than independently verified figures.

His death made him one of the most widely commemorated Armenian military aviators.
